The Institute for Automotive Engineering (ika) of RWTH Aachen University is Europe’s leading institute in automotive engineering and directed by Professor Lutz Eckstein. Starting from the idea to innovative concepts for components and systems up to vehicle prototypes the staff of the institute creates and designs the future vehicle. In cooperation with car manufacturers and suppliers the ika is making an acknowledged contribution to help solve current and future global challenges.

The divisions Chassis, Body, Drivetrain, Electrics/Electronics and Driver Assistance represent the classic automotive domains and cooperate closely with the cross-divisional departments of Strategy and Consulting, Vehicle Concepts, Acoustics, Thermal Management as well as Driver Experience and Performance in an interdisciplinary manner. This wide range of expertise enables analysing and optimising the vehicle as a whole, while paying attention to the complex interactions between the individual subsystems. The divisions are linked by focusing on the various features of the vehicle; safety, energy efficiency and driving experience.

In this process ika is involved in the development of the idea, up until the completion of a finished prototype, focusing on the demands of sciences and industry. The institute’s extensive infrastructure is the basis for intensive research for large parts of the automotive industry, as well as for publically funded research by the EU as well as on a federal and national level. In addition to the drive, battery, chassis and tire test benches it also comprises acoustic, thermal dynamic and servo hydraulic research facilities. The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is the European Commission’s in-house science service which employs scientists to carry out research in order to provide independent scientific advice and support to EU policy.

The Institute for Energy and Transport (IET) is one of the seven scientific Institutes of the JRC. The IET is based both in Petten, the Netherlands and in Ispra, Italy, where the Sustainable Transport Unit is located.
The Sustainable Transport Unit focuses on vehicle use, driving patterns, fuel consumption and emissions. Increasing attention is devoted to the development of test procedures and assessment tools for hybrid/electric vehicles for which the existing legislation is not fully adequate. All activities are based on VELA Laboratories, allowing testing all types of vehicles and engines under legislative as well as realistic operation conditions. The VELA lab comprises emission climatic test cells for LDVs, a dynamic test bench for HDVs and a climatic test with a chassis dynamometer for HDVs.

The JRC is located across six different sites within the EU. Brussels is home to the headquarters and also to the Directorate-General, the Scientific Policy and Stakeholder Relations Directorate and the Resources Directorate.

The VIRTUAL VEHICLE is an international institution in the field of application-oriented vehicle development. More than any other European research institute it unites a variety of sub-disciplines from the field of vehicle simulation technologies. The development of new technologies, methods and tools for individual CAE disciplines and CAE integration takes center stage. A multidisciplinary approach to product development and coupled simulation are central research topics. In addition, VIRTUAL VEHICLE features a variety of test stands and highly sophisticated new measurement methods in both its own test center and in cooperation with the Technical University Graz. This also enables the validation of simulation processes and “hybrid verification”, which involves the connection of simulation and testing for system design.

VIRTUAL VEHICLE functions as a bridge between university research and advanced industrial development. The bundled competencies found at VIRTUAL VEHICLE, together with the coverage of individual CAE topics and CAE integration, form a research platform that is unique in the world of CAE.

The Advanced Materials Processing Laboratory has a wide range of facilities for the synthesis and processing of functional materials, which includes: hydrothermal, screen printing and tape casting; spark plasma sintering (HPD 25/1 furnace by FCT System, Germany); milling (including, Planetary Micromill Pulverisette by Frisch); freeze and rotary evaporation drying; cutting, grinding and polishing; ovens and furnaces. The thermoelectric laboratory is equipped to measure Seebeck coefficient (ZEM-3) and thermal diffusivity (Netzsch, LFA457) up to 1,100°C.

TU/e recognizes the automotive trend of more-electric drive trains, including the benefits of electromechanical vehicle auxiliaries. The Control Systems Technology (CST) group (mechanical engineering) focuses on advanced data and model-based control methods and methods for integrated system design (co-design of plant and controller) for mechatronic and automotive application areas. More specifically, the research activities for hybrid (electric) powertrains are aimed at the following areas: development and validation of mathematical powertrain models to support optimal powertrain configuration (topology optimization); component technology selection/design and optimal control design; development of integrated system design methods for these multi-domain engineering systems.
